Folly had never had a rope halter on until last Friday - when I realised that she would be at the show on Saturday wearing one!!
Molly had a rope halter in showing classes until one day she outran me, and I realised I needed more control, and thats when I put her in a bridle.
I do like to see Dales in a white halter - but it all depends if you feel in control!!

LOL...sounds like you might need the bridle on Tola rather than Merlin

as a yearling, you could gently bit Merlin, we did this with maria when she was very strong as a yearling, using a happy mouth nylon mullen mouth and it gave her something to think about (and chew on). We never did have to lead her around in a bridle or bit though as she came through the stage of acute wilfulness just in time. However you really should use whichever control you need, but be wary of leading from a bit in a young horses mouth - but then you know that!

I think that is right, I wasn't actually advising showing in a bit in one so young, just suggesting that if anyone felt more comfortable and in control using that method then that is the way to go. We have found the rope halters good for control though and so far so good have only used these to show youngsters.
