By scrape marks I meant mud off the stallions hooves, he hadn't actually dug his hooves in or anything LOL!!
I suppose some of the mares at Newmarket are extremely valuable, so a covering blanket is a good idea .....cannot see Molly running round the field in one of those though.

I had to smile when someone referred to the Pennels as a 'professional stud' on another thread. I would like to say they are VERY professional but actually this was an arrangement between friends made last year when Julie still lived up the road to me. At that time I didn't want D to travel anywhere as she had already been away from home for a few weeks and I didn't want to unsettle her any more. Then she developed foot abscess and the time just wasn't right. This year Julie was kind enough to still honour that arrangement even though she had moved, was living in the middle of a building site and not exactly planning on taking any visiting mares! So here are the photos of my little maiden mare! The peice of string is in case the maiden mare doesn't lift her tail out of the way enough. Anna could get it right out of the way so that Magic didn't get frustrated at not being able to get at where he wanted to be! Hello handsome..... Anna - have you got any polos? I have two more but they show a bit more. I'll put them on if you want me to but thought I'd start with these.

Thanks for the pics Linda. Thats interesting about the string. I did know the tail is usually bandaged for in hand covering, but not about the string. Thats a very good idea though.

That's a great photo - I like the string idea too. Much better than having to be round the back end trying to lift it out of the way with half a ton of excited stallion above you!

It keeps us safe which is the biggest risk in covering inhand hence why i'm the other side of the gate and mum has him on the longest lead we have. The string isn't used on every occasion, it tends to be on maidens or those that we know are liable to dropping their tail but it makes no difference to the mare if its there or not, just easier for us

I have been really impressed with how safety conscious Julie and Anna are - for the people AND the ponies involved. When I saw their first covering of one of their own maiden mares I was struck by how calm, quiet, organised, peaceful and safe everything was.

we have had to "make do" with covering places this year but will have a designated area for covering and teasing next year.I like to be the only one near the couple as it means I dont have to worry about people as well as the ponies. Most mares will lift their tails on their own but she hadnt lifted her s much on first teasing so we took precautions.she wouldnt need it again I dont think.Hopefully we wont find out as she will scan in foal.

Ooo see Iv learnt something else, thats a good idea with the string.... I didnt even know some mares wouldnt lift the tail and it does look very proffesh and safety conscious. Thanks for pic Linda, D doesnt look too bothered does she lol. Oooo Iv just seen all the wee on the floor in first pic, isnt there a lot!? I know nothing haha.
