Well, it may not have been a suprise to Leia, but it certainly was to me a fantastic filly
After having checked Leia over on Saturday and decided she wasn't showing the least sign of foaling, we did the morning rounds on Sunday before coming in for a late breakfast and a cup of coffee. We'd just sat down for some toast at 11.00 when one of our neighbours came rushing into the yard to tell us that we had a mare foaling. She had just foaled when we arrived and found this - very new and very wet
It was a bright, sunny morning, but with a very strong, cold wind, so we towelled baby dry. Once we started Leia caught on and started licking her too. The length of her legs is just unbelievable, not sure if this is a foal or a spider!
It took a lot of organising to get those legs working together to support her, poor soul fell straight over the first twice she tried, but here's her first successful standing up
She was really taken with Neil, seemed to think he was her Mum and went tottering off to him wherever he moved to.
Leia wasn't bothered, she knew we would look after her babe and leave her to get on with important business - eating. She is just the best Mum ever, hard to believe she hasn't done this dozens of times before.
Sorry it's taken so long to tell you all about Leia, we are just so busy at the moment and I've had trouble with logging on to Photobucket.
We brought them into the stableyard for a couple of days to keep an eye on them, but they are now turned out with the other two mares and foals. I'll put some more photos on as soon as I get time.
