I've gradually shifted Galahad to Purina's Senior Diet and he's on three meals a day in an attempt to get some weight on him. Ever so slowly he's regaining muscling now that I've added the lunch.
However, I've noticed that as he eats his Senior feed and for awhile after, the veins along his belly, shoulder and inner thighs will stand up. ?? Does anyone know what this is from?
Galahad doesn't seem to notice at all, other than he adores the Senior feed and literally licks the bucket clean. But I'm not so sure this might be the best for him with his veins standing up like that.

Well they can certainly have insulin resistance and I'm pretty sure being lami prone means much the same regarding diabetic. Galahad's not a dales pony, though. He's 23 and a grade quarter horse. I've recently switched him from Purina Strategy to Senior in an effort to help him regain some very much needed weight. But I'm not certain what this is, regarding the veins standing up like this. I'm assuming its blood flowing to the intestines to help digest the meal, but I've never noticed it when he was on Strategy.

Vickys veins show sometimes, Debbie. Do you think its just an old horse thing maybe?
I am trying to get weight on Vicky too. She is on senior conditioning mix, which she is eating, and its costing me a fortune, as veteran horse mix is more expensive than other mixes.

I know what you mean Mair, Galahad's going through Equine Senior at a fast rate. It wasn't until I jacked him up to 3 feeds a day that he's started to ever so slowly lay down weight over his haunches, a tad over his shoulders, and very very slightly we're getting coverage over his back and withers again. I've started Source Senior with him as well. Its supposed to have all sorts of enzymes, flax and some other things to help them digest and absorb the nutrients in the feed better. I think that's starting to make a difference to him already! And its not the Source Senior that's causing this veining, as I noted it before I began adding the Source Senior. Its something to do with the Senior diet. Nothing's ever straightforward when it comes to taking care of horses
