Vegetarian Horse Feeds

I've been spending a busy few days phoning feed companies and I am sad to say that many of them still use animal byproducts in their feed (mainly geletine binders in the vitamin and mineral premix).

So to make everyone's life easier here is a list of who does what:

Use pork geletine in their vit/min premix
Spillers (who make Happy Hoof etc)
Baileys (who initially said it was vege )
Dengie (but only in the stuff which has vits/mins in - so things like Hifi, Hifi Lite, Alfa A, are fine (but NOT Hifi Good Doer))

Vegetarian Society Approved:
Allen and Page
Dodson and Horrell (but not so they can put their bags, but it's approved for use on organic farms - the lady was VERY knowledgable and could explain how/what they use)


I find it very sad that in the years following foot and mouth and BSE we've still not learnt the problems that can follow from feeding herbivores meat byproducts.

Thats actually quite scary! Ive gone organic at home, and i have been wondering about my ponies feeds, Keep digging, i would be very intersted

That's interesting, Olivia. I knew about (and for that reason use) Allen and Page and also Dengie Hi Fi Senior but have not looked into the supplements/balancers I use.

I tend to try and feed Allan and Page if possible ....but it is expensive. I have their goat mix, as some of the other brands smell suspiciously meaty to me - and goats don't eat meat, well not mine anyway. I give the oddies Senior Hi Fi.

I thought with all this fuss about animals not eating waste human food, and anything going in the food chain cannot eat any left over food etc. that things would have changed with regard to what went in animal feed. If we are not allowd to do it at home, why should the feed companies be able to allow it!!!

Interesting thread AND i WAS going to change mine from Hi Fi Lite to Good Doer, don't think i'll bother now!!! Wonder about Blue Chip as i also feed that and a few supplements too!
