ok. when iv bred foals in the past iv let them naturally wean from mum over their first winter so by feb mums had enough and gets rid of them herself.. this year we are at a field(well 4 but all next to each other) with no stables. mum had to be sold so is sold and being picked up at weaning time(6 months) at end sept.
how would you suggest i wean? would it be less stressful to just take mum away one day(end sept) or to try to gradually wean(ie put mum in diff field before hand for a few hours at a time, but they'd be able to see and hear each other so not sure if this would create more stress for bub). at the moment they are in with 3 other ponies.the foal likes my other pony and spends a lot of time with him.she is independant and only seems to go to mum for food now and the odd scratch,in fact shes often grazing on other side of field from all the ponies.
suggestions needed as iv not had to wean at 6 months before

we are now all weaned and went very well, very little fuss and bother. Fern is now out in a field with 2 small welsh section A fillies for company and 2 older geldings to teach all of the foals acceptable behaviour
