Just posting this as I had a tidy up today and on the back of spillers Hi Fibre cubes it advises feeding a tablespoon of salt a day. I feel like a really bad mother now! I have never fed salt.

Please don't worry. It is far better to let your horse have access to a salt lick so they can take what they need than assuming they need a certain amount to replace what is lost and putting it in the food.

Phew, thats ok then, they both have a salt lick which they barely touch. I've had horses for 20+ years and never fed salt, only electrolytes after excessive sweating. I thought I had missed some miracle advance in feeding!

I live in Missouri where we have excessive heat during the summers. No one gives their horses or ponies salt in their feeds. Instead the horses are allowed access to a salt lick...and a mineral block if they're truly posh, and all are fine with this.
As your ponies have access to a salt lick, and don't really seem to use it.....and plus the fact you're right there with the electrolytes if they've really sweated... I think you've got all bases covered!

We've just got Cobweb and Zoey a red Rockies 5 kg for £6.50. They love it but I dont put salt in their feed at least with a lick they can choose when they need it.

Salt lick shoud be fine. I also put out those huge blocks and noticed in the heat last week all 3 ponies were taking great chunks out of it. They know when to take in more salt.

I have a block in each field, for the sheep too - sometimes that makes for about 8 blocks out at any one time!! If H has been sweating a lot I give him a teaspoon of salt for a couple of feeds, but only if he's on a big feed rtion and working REALLY hard (30 + miles at over 6 mph).

coloured mineral blocks do not always have salt in. For proper cover offer a red, a white and a yellow and they will pick what they want!

If you have other animals in the same field, watch that they can share the blocks - I know sheep can't have the red rockies.
