At 1pm today we weaned the last three foals. All foals are out in their field with the foster mum Alice and April. The mums are eating hay in the stables. No shouting at all yet.perhaps they were all ready to go their separate ways. The mums are in foal for next year so need some time for chilling.

Just done the evening horses and foalies are happily grazing in one big bunch whilst mums are just as happy munching hay indoors. Seems all very peaceful here which is great news.

Glad it's all gone smoothly. I hate weaning. The only thing worse is parting with the babies

Yes no probs, it won't be for a few days though as I've got a free pass-out of work for the next couple of days (day's off!) so am not about but will get you an upto-date piccie when i'm back. All is quiet this morning!

Glad yours all went well.
I'm worrying about doing this at some point!
How long do you leave babies on if the mare's not in foal again? How do you "know" when they are ready? Had you separated them before for short periods??
Question, questions!!
Thanks.

well.all three girls are out in the field hopefully walking off their huge bags from having stood in all night.No-one is calling ,all is peacefull.I have to say it was the smoothest weaning i have ever done.To answer Lucy we do not do any separation before. We have found out that if you separate for an hour and then put them back they have to start all over again the next time. The mares and foals had come up for tet and flu injections yesterday and then the mares walkied to the yard whilst the foals walked out to the field in the opposite direction.I think it has been made easier this time as the mums are together and the foals are in their own field with friendsthey already know.

You'll know Lucy, Tim won't be drinking anything like as much, Mum won't worry where he is and you'll just "feel" its time, don't worry, i think us Humans fret about it more than the mares and foals.
Our foals were all early foals so are a bit further long the line than most as they are all at about the 5 month stage and 2 were nearer 6 months now and have been ignoring mum for a long time now!

Thanks very much ladies, your advice is greatly appreciated! My feeling is to leave him til after Christmas at the earliest (6 months) unless Amy is struggling, and probably until the grass starts in spring. No doubt my plans will change! Does it ever get to apoint where you don't have anything to worry about??!!
