5-6 months. Have done at 4 months before from necessity under vets advice and never effected the foal. Depends a bit on the foal, 5 months is generally well accepted as long as the foal is strong enough and eating their own bit of hard feed/grass/hay etc.

We tend to wean at 6-7 months - no particular reason why, it's just what we do. As Anna says, most foals are sufficiently well-grown and confident to be seperated off at 5 months, particularly if they have other youngsters to play with.

Melody was almost 7 months, Maverick will be around 7 months too, but like Helen there is no particular reason for that age, its just what we do. It fits in with other things that are going on for us and from 6 months onwards they are more than ready for it.

If it helps at all, Maisie weaned Blossom when she was just five months. I think so much depends upon the mare and the fitness of the foal/their capability of eating feeds on their own.
