I've got the vet coming tomorrow. Quest is possibley showing signs of lami again - normal pulses but feeling his feet badly. It could be a combination of just being trimmed, grass starting to shoot through and a change in hay.
Also, he's had an enlarged thyroid for several years which the vet wasn't concerned about but it has got bigger and I feel there may be a link between the thyroid and Lami. I've read there are new ideas on a link between enlarged thyroids, thyroiditis and symptoms such as hives and insulin reisistance. I'm going to ask for a Cushings test too.
Quest is an old horse and very sensitive, physically and emotionally, so I don't want to put him through a load of tests away from home but I need to get to the bottom of his problems.
Please send lots of Dalesfans vibes for Quest!

Well, Dalesfans did the job again! This morning Quest looked almost back to normal which is quite amazing when you think yesterday he didn't want to leave his soft bed at all.
The vet came and must have spent a good hour examining Quest and discussing it with me and Ali. She thinks the lami flare up was most likely triggered off by the change in hay but she wasn't too concerned. He didn't flinch in the slightest with the hoof testers and she thought he is moving absolutely fine - we know different because he normally has a very extravagent, active, bouncy walk. He did have 2 Bute yesterday AM and again PM and one this morning but she says that wouldn't mask a bad lami case.
We discussed the enlarged thyroid which she isn't concerned about. She did say the latest thinking is that there is a link between thyroid hormone status, adrenal, Cushings and lami (the wholemmetabolic syndrome thing) but even if they are right, there is nothing we can do about it at the moment. There is still too little understood about it all.
She does suspect Quest is in early stage Cushings and we've had blood tests to check on this plus also liver status and thyroid - more out of interest rather than anything else. If the tests indacate some degree of Cushings, which won't be accurate anyway, we'll try Quest on Pergolide which should ease the lami situation and give him a few more comfortable years.
We talked about an awful lot and it will take me some time to digest it all but at least Quest is feeling a lot better in himself. I'm going to keep him in a bit longer for my own peace of mind butnthe vet thought he would be fine to go out now. The blood results will be back Friday hopefully so I should know more then. All of this has meant Harvey escaped being ridden AGAIN!

I'm glad Quest is more comfortable Pam - at least you seem to have had some helpful info from the vet. What a worry they are!
