Hi all, I don’t generally post I’m more of a lurker, but I’d really appreciate some advise.
My Mare who’s a Dales-look-alike seems to be lacking energy and spark when ridden.
She is around 15hh, 12/13 years, she lives out 24/7 (unless we have terrible weather when she will be brought in) She has a small clip and is rugged. I’d prefer her out 24/7 as she has very mild COPD and she is out on Vets advice so the condition does not worsen.
She is fed just under a scoop of Dobson and Horrell Fibergy and Baileys Lo-Cal balancer (two cups) once a day and given a couple of sections of hay at night.
She shares a field with one other horse and there is still grass left.
She puts on weight very easily but at the min seems to be ok but I obviously don’t want her gaining any additional weight as I like her to loose weight over the winter as when Spring comes its very difficult to keep the weight off her.
She is ridden about 5 times a week, including one lesson a week for 45 mins which will either be jumping or flat work, I then school twice during the week for 30 mins. On the weekend I hack out twice for about 1 – 2 hours (all off road and quite hilly) and hacks generally include walk, trot and a little canter.
She has had her teeth, back and saddle checked recently and all are well. She is very happy in her self and her goat is gleaming but she seem to be lacking her sparkle – she generally is very forward on hacks but recently has just lacked her oomph – her hacking partner (a connie x tb) can’t generally keep up with her trot but at the moment we are being left behind.
I’m going to give both Dobson and Horrell and Baileys a call this afternoon to get some advice from them but just thought I’d ask some advice on here as you all have loads of experience with Dales.
Sorry about the essay - I didn’t mean to ramble on for that long
Thanks in advance……
Here are a couple of pics (hopefully they will work)...
