Pearl has become a bit down in the dumps. Nothing actually wrong just a bit, well, humpy-grumpy. My OH suffers terribly from SAD and as soon as the days get short and darker he gets humpy-grumpy too!! Does anyone have any experience of horses suffering from this?

I'm not sure if its the same as human SAD but I think they must get as fed up as us of short days, early dark and mud and wet. I certainly am and you do notice a difference in the ponies behaviour on warm sunny days to wet miserable ones.

Yes - I think that, like humans, some horses are more down in the winter. Bea is definitely happier on sunny days in winter....or maybe I'm happier and that transmits to him?

Yep, I think they do suffer just like humans. I know Blossom's been grumpus in the past winters. Mostly its on really dark, overcast days. I'm sure some of its because it hinders on her playing, but I do think a lot has to do with the sun factor. You could always rig up an overhead light for her stall (well out of reach) and then hook that to a timer so she could get 12 hours of sunlight. Say 7am to 7pm. They do a wonderful range of natural sunlight type bulbs nowadays. Wouldn't hurt to give a similar light for your hubby

They do daylight bulbs for your normal house lights now too and you can get energy saving ones so might be worth changing them all as your light bulbs go.
