Hi I am a bridle maker but I have a fair saddle knowledge so I hope this will help. Your choice of saddle depends on what you wish to do and your budget. But I think for a good saddles you can't beat The Ideal saddle company. They are one of the few remaining companies to still make saddle in the UK. They do make specific dressage and event saddles etc. but for a good all round saddle I use a 17.5" extra wide working hunter on my Dales. It has enough knee roll for jumping but straight enough to show in and so comfortabe to hack in. I also have them on my other two ponies and love them. Lovely soft wide panel against the pony and wide gulley to give spine plenty of room. I have had barnsby sadlles too in the past lovely saddles but not as comfy for pony or rider. The most important thing is that you have a society of master saddlers saddle fitter. They are well trained and so should make sure your pony has the correct width and length of saddle. I show a fair bit so I don't have synthetic saddles but I have used a wintec and a thorogood both were ok but always prefer english leather if well looked after will last a lifetime and definately worth the investment. Never trust foreign saddle I have taken several apart and they are made of junk in one case the stirrup bars were barely attatched and another according to my teacher was flocked with cigarette packets!!! Hope this helps sorry I have rambled on a bit!

thank you for your imput, and what an interesting job you have.. i seem to remember that my friends used to use an ideal working hunter on their pony years ago... i had wondered about synthetic initially and then upgrading to leather later on, especially as he has probably done very little of late and may change shape a bit.... thank you again.

I have Harley in a Wintec Wide synthetic adjustable - it is the one with the really wide panels. I've had it for 7 years and have done LOADS of miles in it as I do endurance. I always meant to upgrade to leather but have never quite got round to it!!

I think you have asked the "how long is a piece of string" question.
We all seem to have different saddles on here LOL Depends on particular pony / rider preferences and finding a ompromise somewhere between the tow. ?)
