For anybody expecting a first time foal who may be interested in seeing what an expelled placenta should look like, here's a photo of Lass/Raider's: This could be considered sensitive by some folks, so don't scroll down if you don't like this sort of thing!Hope that's ok mods? It's hopefully educational? Helen

Gosh - is that it? I thought it would look like a lump of bloody liver or something. That looks like the foetal sac (is that what's it's called - or amniotic sac or something....dur! LOL)

Suzie - The bit in the top of the photo is the outer sac - the allantois chorion which adheres to the uterus and absorbs the nutrients that the foal needs to grow. You can see the tear where the foal comes out. The lower part is the inner sac - the amnion, which is the white membrane that appears at the mare's vulva at the start of the birthing process. The thin straggly bit in the middle of the photo is the umbilical cord. It's vital that you check the expelled placenta for missing parts as just a tiny bit left inside the mare can cause a fatal septacemia If youre not confident about checking the afterbirth - bag it up and get your vet to check it Valerie - Lass and Raider are thriving thankyou Jane - I think lots of "prey" animals gobble up their placentas. I suppose it's a survival mechanism to keep predators off the scent. Rather them than me!

I also thought there would a lot more 'substance' to it - it looks like a membrane! I know my own afterbirth(s) were rather more solid LOL!!

Wow - thanks for the explanation, Helen. My own afterbirths were so substantial (as Gill says) that I expected a horse one to be the same, but bigger.
VERY interesting - thanks for posting.

It got ceremonially burnt in Christophe and Martin's inferno today. Very pagan Row - the livery looking bit would be the hippomane. You can see a photo of Raider's hippomane on his "Introducing" thread in Horsey Chat

Well Lucy keeps threatening that Tim's are coming off, so you never know what photo you may find on here next No-one can complain that dalesfans is boring! Would Lucy need to use the MACRO lens ;D My French neighbour was mortified that I had thrown away my Angora goat's testicles after castration. They would have been in his frying pan. Yuk!
