Do have access to some form of stabling or smaller paddock? I wondering if you need to go totally back to ground zero and start by constantly catching and releasing him. Catch, treat, release, catch, pet/scratch, release, catch, groom, release, etc. So that he gets in the hang of being caught again, but not so that every time is caught = work. Also, having him up in a smaller area prevents his taking ages in escaping you, or escaping you altogether. Its absolutely no fun when you show up at the end of a long day to play with your pony and they simply take themselves to the far end of the field.

i really do appreciate all this imput.. debbie, i can catch him fine, he comes to call, so what i do is some days i just call him and make a big fuss, and others i take him out the field and do leading games and training and others i groom and put his bridle on, ive been trying to vary it, weve been doing this for several weeks now.....
he is terrified of elec fencing so i make sure i do everything well away from it, but its whenever i take him out of the field that he starts to play up, and then gets progressivly worse.... it has been commented that he is stallion like in his behaviour, but ive never had anyhthing to do with stallions so i cant comment, but he seems totally ok with all other horses...

Sounds like he's overbonded to his herd buddies. I don't think this is a stallion behavior, as I've seen mares and geldings pitch some pretty big hissy fits when they've been taken from their field buddies. Ranks right up there with being barn sour, so not fun to deal with!

Re saddles- Oz is fairly short coupled, thought I'd need a 16.5 but had no idea how I'd fit in one!! Got Caroline out from sports horse services and we've got a whitaker saddle that fits us both well that's 17" but it doesn't look too big on him or sit too far back

To be honest sue you need kes back!! he wouldnt of given u any problems!! I drive a pony pair at the moment and 1's very sensitive in mouth so got him in a straight bar happy mouth and 1's prone to pissing off and being naughty so i have in a ported kimblewick (both riding bits not driving bits), i know everyone things port's are harsh but they have more room for there tonges + cant hang onto the bit which brings them off of their forehand, ports are only harsh if you hang on to them, i remember you saying you got a very good price for him, no offence but if he was a fantastic ride and drive pony why did he end up coming back?? Yes he is probably trying it on and being a sod, easy answer dont feed it and worked it hard, this is just my opion, tack it up, find a nice big hill and take for a good gallop!! garenteed that shuts them up!! Good luck sue

im glad you wished me luck, bayboy, and yes i do need kes, but we both know thats not possible.... did have a breakthro today tho, put him in a waterford which he liked, tacked him up in a borrowed saddle, and we rode him... my daughter first and then me( very nervously)... he seems very green , has no bend, but he was good !!! still had all the usual leading hassle etc, but at least we got further today...

I think he's still testing you, when you lead him if he doesnt like a bit in his mouth maybe put the rope in his mouth, or over his nose, what does he do when you lead him?? just because he's 12 still doesnt mean he's done a huge ammount of work, like a new horse or any horse you dont know the history of, always best to treat like a youngster whos never done it, take him right back to basic, time and consistancy will pay off in time

Its a start!!! And butter wouldn't melt in that pic. He really is a handsome fella. Seems to be happy enough with the new bit, so fingers crossed that will do the trick.

I would make sure that you either toothpaste or mloss the bit, or even give a sugar lump after bitting to encourage him to welcome it and move his mouth to help relax him. Also there a number of saddles which come up short giving you a less length and more seat. Fylde ray is one of these, made for highlands but comes up nice and short. you can also get some ideals with a wide seat and a short panel which would also work easily for you.

Wonderful news!!!! Here's hoping he'll give in and relax thoroughly into the routine. He does look like he's enjoying the new bit.

With reference to the saddles, might be worth seeing another saddler, who may deal in different manufactors. I say this as my boy is a connie and 13.3 3/4 hh (LOL) and he is able to take a 17 inch, but the saddle shape, fits smaller for him, due to the shape, but long enough for me.
We have one saddle fitter, who does know his stuff in the area, but is limited to the different makes, which i believe is his down fall. The lady i now use, has such a huge variety she is able to fit almost everything. I don't think yet she has been defeated. On the other side, she will make sure the saddle is best for both rider and horse.
Hope that is a little help
