Little bit concerned about my old lad Coltie. He struggles a bit to eat hay - vet says pony may be 26 but his teeth are 36!!!! He's looking a bit on the tucked side (the pony not the vet).In himself he's bouncing(again pony not vet) but i would like to see him a bit rounder. He's wormed etc up to date, and is currently on chaff, mix and sugar beet - he has been on ready grass but due to the neighbouring horse going down with terrible lami from ready-grass i'm a bit loathed now for Colt to have much(he has had lami in the past) Sugar beet and the usual 'old' pony feeds don't seem to have made any difference but although I want him rounder I don't want any laminitis and I don't want him going loopy(he's 12.2) I have big field,no grass and I don't think much is going to come through this spring either.Any suggestions?
oops Mods you may think this should have gone in the 'feeding' thread... sorry!

My old girl Jenny is 42 this year. She didn't put weight on last summer though she was on good grass. She's about 13.3, Arab x Welsh. She has a heavyweight rug on constantly from December until mid March (she's very wary and won't tolerate being caught every day to mess around rugging/unrugging). Her front teeth are pretty worn but her molars aren't too bad.
I am a firm believer in good old fashioned grass nuts. She gets about 1/4 pound dry weight, well soaked for 24 hours plus 1 pound leisure mix, a good handful of fibergy with a scoop of zerobute and hay/straw. All my horses have grass nuts - my big guy Apollo drops weight at the drop of a hat but the grass nuts have helped him stay rounded this winter. They are cheap too - £7.50 for 25kg from an agricultural feed merchant.

Thanks for the help.Yes Coltie is rugged but he is out at night - try keeping him in!!!!! I wonder if it's not a con as he can't eat his hay very well but demolished severel whole turnips and a couple of parnips in a nano second the other day.....I'm going to get some grass nuts and he's back in work so a bit of muscle may help too.
