I've got the sprenger type and also the wide plastic endurance sort. I like them both and wouldn't ride in anything else now. They really do relieve joint pain/stress for me. I did try the hinged flexible ones but hated them. Can you borrow some to try before splashing out?

I also had a hinged pair and didn't like riding in them, but not tried the Sprenger ones. I mainly ride in my wide tread Thorowgood stirrups, they are very light and comfortable.

Ive been looking at them on ebay, they were around £20, Ill check they are not the hinged ones. I dont know any one that got a pair to lend, but I thought for that price, not bad.

I think Nancy's lent me the Sprenger's to try. They're upstairs, so I'm not 100% sure on the name. I'd never encountered them before, but they're amazing!!! Absolutely comfortable, and a real treat on the joints.
Not sure how I'd feel about them if I was jumping, though.

I have the Sprenger ones and wouldn't be without them. They are pricey and there are cheaper ones on the market....but as I've not tried the cheaper ones I can't say whether they're as good.
At £20 give it a go - you can always sell them again if you don't like them.

I'm really pleased this has come up. Was out for a couple of hours last weekend and my ankles were really hurting and I thought I should come and ask you guys about it - but here's the thread already Olivia

I ride in the endurance stirrups Olivia as featured on the performance equestrian website, they are brilliant, when I first started doing the endurance rides I had a problem with my left knee and after about 15miles I was in pain and would have to pop a few painkillers but after changing over to these I have had no problems, its due to the shock absorbing pad thats built into them, I would,nt ride without them now.

I have a pair with D'Angles and flex chains. I love em. It reminds me to keep something down.

I've just bought a pair of the Flexi-stirrups from Ebay, I'm just waiting for them to arrive. They are definaitely not Sprenger ones but I thought I'd give them a try as they do look nice & sturdy. I'll let you all know how I like them (or not! )

I use the endurance ones as well - they have a lovley broad foot base and definitely help the knees on long rides.

I noticed today as I checked out the ones Nancy lent me...yes they are Sprenger... they also have offset eyes. At least I think that's what they're called. The eyes are at a ninety degree angle to the stirrup, meaning they lay flat and do the bending instead of your knee or ankle taking the pressure of the twist. Anyone doing western riding, I've also seen a 'converter' for the stirrups. They do a similar deal where they pivot the stirrup so its not your knee taking the pressure to bend the fender round.

I rode in the flexi-stiups yesterday. I can't say that I noticed any great difference to normal stirrups apart from there seems to be a little bit of "spring". They certainly felt comfortable.......Not sure what I'm actually meant to feel though :)

What I noticed might have been more from the offset eyes than from the flex in the stirrup. It took a lot of strain off my knees. The pressure on the ball of my foot didn't seem to change much, but the pressure on my ankle was less, and I was able to drop my heels even further than usual because the stirrup bent to go with the angle of my foot instead of digging into the ball of my foot.
