I need a new girth for misty. She is in a stubben travia but due to her losing alot of weight its too big now, also she is getting a bit funny about been girthed up which she has never been bothered about, she even squealed at me this morning! (she is generally a squeally mare so im not too worried) but even so i think i would like to try something else. I love the look of the barnsby girths especially the one with the equaliser end on. But they are nearly £100 And the comfort ones look fab! I need one with a split end or a humane end as she has a cob saddle which has 4 girth straps system. I want her to be as comfortable as possible as we do quite long hacking. And also something that will help stop my saddle slipping, although i am getting a barnsby grip pad. Just wondered what you all used, any preferences and why? Thanks Jo

I use the Cottage Craft humane girths, or the Thorogood padded and shaped girths and have never had any problems with either. I like the humane ones because they are easy to do up (!) and do seem to move with the horse. The Thorogood ones just look so super comfy to me!
My saddle has 4 straps as well, I always used to use 1 and 4, but when the saddler came last August she told me to use 2 and 3!!

i swear by thorogood or wintec girths, cos they give with the horses movement.

Stubben trevira - will buy yours!!
my physio swears by them.
If your saddle is slipping, if this causing the squealing, rather than the girth?

I use a WOW "H" girth - not cheap about £150, but they've solved a myriad of problems for Tilly and I. Conventional girths always pulled Tilly's saddle forwards as is croup high with a forward girth groove. Having two straps means the back strap keeps the saddle back, down and secure. I don't have a problem with conventional girths at all (favourite being leather with a central elasticated piece) - but the H girth has solved lots of problems I had with Tilly. (PS - I've been advised to avoid girths with only elastic on one side as they can pull unequally on the saddle. Also the humane girths can be very easily overtightened unless you're very careful (which I never am!!!) so have always avoided them too.)

I use the Thorowgood Airoform girths on all of mine, they are dressage as the saddles I have (Heather Moffett Fhoenix and Vogue) have long straps but I've had no problems whatsoever with them. They are easy to maintain (just hose off if muddy) and so far Dancer, Cherry and Remy have used them. Pretty cheap as well, under £20

Very interesting, Olivia, iv never seen anything like the H Girth before. Am i right in thinking they only come in dressage? Thanks for the pics. Jane did saddler give a reason for using 2 and 3 straps? Im using 1 and 4 at the moment. Southerner, you are welcome to my stubben travia, but it might be too big if you have slim dales! Its 50", black. I do have a thorowgood girth that im going to use until i get another but its brown and i want a black!

iv changed my mind!! I did a pleasure ride on saturday with some very steep hills. I swapped girths with my friend and used her humane aerborn girth with my nu med girth sleeve. The saddle went right up her neck i had to get off and put it back where it should be! Iv never had that problem with her, i swapped back to my stubben girth and all was well again, saddle never moved once. So im off to get a smaller stubben!

Wintec ones I think are brill.
I always stay well away from an elesticated ends, as the saddles slip on most shapes and sizes i find. The stubben string girth one, i found great on my Highland, be i found my connie didn't like this girth.

The saddler seemed to think it would keep the saddle more secure - she's due back soon so I'll ask her then!

I have always been a fan of wintec girths, with there roller buckles (much more girth strap and user friendly) and elastic all the way thru which doesn't squash the rib cage as much. As a saddle fitter however like most thinks its horses for corses and I have come across most things over the years. I have to say that I am really impressed by the reaction to the new wintec cair girths as girth shy horses really do seem to prefer them and trust me I was skeptical to start with too! cairgirthsystem.com/flash.htm

we use the cottage craft humane girth. I like them as they are independently elasticated you can, in effect go up 1/2 a hole, if that makes sense... you do have to careful as it is possible to crank them up too tight though. great in the washing machine as well
