The last few times I have traveled Merls he has rubbed his tail really badly in the trailer, he has never had any problems before and I have tried moving the bar thinking that was the problem, but nothing seems to be working, yesterday we did a short trip to the beach literaly a five minute trip and I had to put animal lintex around it with vet wrap and then a tail guard, luckily after this weekend we don,t have another ride for three weeks so it will give it a chance to heal, but any advice would help, its really strange why he is suddenly doing this.

Could it be mites? Becky suddenly started to rub her mane, tail, head and neck. The vet dianosed mites and gave me a horrible chemical to zap the little s*ds. You couldn't see them with the naked eye. I was relieved it wasn't sweet-itch.

Has the angle of the trailer changed, Van? I'm wondering if it might be tilting now, and tipping him backwards? Could be that with Spring itches, he's discovered the joys of having the bar right there? Perhaps you can pad the bar with those big neoprene or styrofoam tubes that are used to insulate water pipes?

This happened with D but for us it was that we had changed the towing vehicle and the tow bar was too high! Poor D was sloping backwards a bit and bracing herself on the bar. I felt awful when I realised!

Harvey has always braced himself against the rear trailer ramp and now the rear bar (I've finally had one fitted ) but I've never had a problem with tail rubbing. I use a normal tail guard. Strange that Merls has just started having the problem.

Lyle did this last year and ended up with quite a bald patch. It seemed to tie in with a change of his balance and fitness levels. I had to put tail bandages on and then a neoprene tail guard and ensure it was well wrapped without being tight. It seemed to work for us and this year as he has got fitter and his balance is better he has sorted himself out.
I know Merls is fit and used to travel/work, so it may not be the same thing causing it, but possibly a doubling up approach of banadage and guard might help until the hair grows back?
