I've tended to bit all of my youngsters in the bit they will be using later in their training, usually a french link or double jointed with peanut type of bit. In my experience with my youngsters they seem to prefer something with a bit of play such as a double joint, and have not liked the uniform pressure of the straight bar on the tongue. Also straight bars can easily be taken hold of and leant on. When starting to longline full cheek bits are good as they won't slip through the mouth and the cheek puts pressure on the side of the face encouraging them to turn. Remy is longlined in a normal double jointed as she is very easy.
That's just what I do and it's worked for me. No doubt others will have their own opinions, I think it does also depend on the horse or pony though as some will show a definite preference for a particular type of bit and hate others. A useful bit for babies is the nathe bit, although it is a straight bar it has a shaped centre giving a little relief for the tongue; it's very soft and is usually accepted well - one drawback is that it can be chewed through!

I have already had a bit in Cowboy's mouth. However, it is just little amounts of time at the moment.

We have just bitted Talisman (19 month old Dales colt). We used a Happy Mouth french link with cheeks. He seemed to like it, well he didn't object anyway

I've just started bitting Musky - he prefers to be wormed! He made a great deal of fuss about being wormed until he realised I wasn't going to put the bit in his mouth and then he was fine. I do wonder.........
