It is a long while since I started this thread so I thought I would bring it up to date. I haven't done a great deal more - just picking Penley's feet up every day, leaning over him and generally handling him all over. He gets led from the field, down the path to the front paddock a couple of times a week where we concentrate on getting him walking forwards by my shoulder. He still scoots round me when he hears a rabbit crashing through the brambles but generally is very good and has a fabulous walk!
The last week we have given him a couple of tying up lessons. I have been threading a lunge line through the tie ring and holding onto the other end. This way, if he panics, I can let the lunge line out and gradually bring him back in. He hasn't had a panic at all though and stands nicely. Today I gave the line to Joe to hold and gave him his first brush all over. He loved it! I picked his feet out which can be a bit lively when I do the back ones. I don't know if anyone has a better way but I just hold his foot if he kicks out and as soon as he stops, I tell him good boy, put his foot down and give him a good scratch. I'm hoping he will learn that it is better not to kick!
Then he did his first pole today. He really didn't want to go over it but with patience and lots of D and Saturn being led over it he eventually did it. It was handler error really. I was trying to lead him, putting some tension on his lead rope and releasing it as soon as he made any forward effort. However, when I eventually reverted to my "little foal" handling method and grabbed him round his bum and sort of manhandled him towards it, he stepped over like a dream! He got a big cheer and LOTS of scratchies for that!
Thinking back over this summer, these first three and a half months with Penley have been an absolute pleasure. He is such a loving, fun little man and has given me so much enjoyment and entertainment - I am a very lucky lady that God has allowed me the loan of him.

Lovely to hear how Penley is coming on Linda . Re. the picking up of feet, I used the clicker on all the youngsters and found that more than anything else it helped the penny to drop, and they were less likely to kick out. It's a very useful tool!

He's grown a lot and looks a bit odd at the milk bar now! Notice Mum giving him a nip and instructing him to be polite in the second photo!

How tall is he Linda - he looks almost the same height as D. Or is it an optical illusion?

I think his bum is just a tad higher than D's now and she is 13.2. His legs are a bit longer than her's so I'm hoping he will be taller.
