I have noticed the last few days that what I thought was a bit of a sratch on Diggas ear may be something more sinister, it looks like how can I describe it...a grey fungus, the problem is that the little burga won,t let me get anywhere near it and boy have I tried!!! I think I may have to twitch or sedate him, any ideas much appreciated. My vet has been out today, and its not ear mites, just a case of Digga scratching in general and just a little sore, he sedated him and gave his ears a good clean out and he know has a ear mask on bless him, he was such a good boy.

It could be ear mites - but if he's not had them before I'd go for a vets opinions to be sure.
They are a total nightmare - Tilly periodically gets them and they're a pain to treat. Well actually they are very easy - quick squirt of ivermectin spray - but Tilly STILL doesn't like anyone to go near her ears with any kind of cream, ointment or spray, particularly when they're sore with ear mites. So it's normally done with her on two legs and me on none!!!!

If it were me, I'd be fetching the vet out. I know its spendy, but in the case of an ear, its far better to have him sedated/twitched down and have a good and proper look. He's already seriously objecting which means to some extent it has to hurt, or be very annoying to him. Rather than get into a slogging match that you won't win, far, far better to have the vet out and be done with it. That way you can have a very good look to see what's wrong and can deal with it properly rather than possibly getting your nose bashed in by Digga flinging his head. Besides, you don't want him to become headshy from this.

I thought for a min you were going to say he has ear plaques. There's a horse on the yard with them and they're a booga to shift...in fact I'm not sure if they can be cured!

Thanks Sue for the link, I have never heard of that condition before, but thank goodness Digga,s ears are much better, I,m lucky that the two vets I use are experienced equine vets and David the one who came out this week is brilliant, but its nice to know about these condition so at least we can be on the ball in spotting it quickly.
