Just wondering if anyone had heared of horses / ponies having their bladders flushed out? Looking to find out more and some advice really. Long story, but poor Sparks hasn't bee a well boy. Turned out to be white clover, causing high proteins in his body causing it to over work. After antibiotics, i took another urnie sample in, protein levels back to normal, but high segiment levels. The vet wants to flush the bladder out, other wise it will cause bladder stones or infection. She also didn't want to wait until Thursday when she was free, she felt it needed doing tomorrow. So feeling really worried and want to hear what others think know, etc.

Yes, I've heard of this and had it done on a mare I had. She had high sediment build up and recuring infections due to a blockage. In her case a tumour was the cause but it is quite a common problem in geldings apparently, sediment build up causing blockage. Food, type of pasture and water acidity/minerals can effect the amount of sediment - it is normal to produce a certain amount. (I discussed it with the vet at the time and read up loads.)
It was a very quick and simple procedure for my mare. The vet came and did it in the stable at home. Maybe different for a gelding but nothing to worry about. Earlier this year I was thinking I may have to have Winnie's bladder flushed. He also has a lot of sediment due to age and he was doing lots of short wees. The blockage seems to have cleared now since he's been out on a paddock with lots of grass.
If your vet thinks this would help Sparky then I wouldn't be too worried.

Thank you Harveydales. Just feeling a little sick about it today. They are doing it late afternoon. It is all down to this bl**dy white clover in the grass, which has gone mad everywhere this year.

Yes, I've noticed an unusually large amount of white clover around this year.
I'm sure the prodedure will be fine - let us know how it goes.

Same here, loads of white clover this year. I'm sure the proceedure will be straightforwards. Hopefully its all Sparky will need to come right again. And I agree with the vet, when it comes to bladder/kidney stuffs, better sooner than later
