On the 15th August,The Dales Society area 7 enjoyed an open day at Delia Weedons Akehurst Stud. My 13 year old,pony mad neice Evangeline(known as Bean) was visiting from Canada so I took her along.
It was a lovely sunny day and we all met up for coffee before going down to visit the mares and foals.Bean had already met my dales and is a real fan of British native ponies so she was in heaven with the foals,announcing that they where 'the best'. We then had a tour of the stallions,including my mares sire Lowhouses Jet. However on seeing Delias lovely mare Akehurst Rainbow,Bean fell in love and described Rainbow as the most perfect pony ever.
Following a splendid lunch,we went off for the in-hand handy pony class.Delia had devised a brilliant obstacle course,including a letter box complete with letters to post,a dusty bin and many other spooky obstacles.The local dog training club also put on a dog course and offered lots of help and advice.
Bean was able to have a go at the handy pony class with one of Delias ponies Queenine and to her joy received a rosette,her first ever in a pony class.No one could have been happier.It was then time to make tracks home,and it seemed strange that in less than 48 hours Bean would be on her way back to Calgary.
It was a wonderful day and a huge thank you goes out to Delia and her team Akehurst for putting on such a great show,and to the other dales members who kindly let Bean join in. She left for her flight clutching her rossetes,a copy of Native Pony which had an article on her beloved Rainbow,dozens of photographs and the happiest of memories.
I've have since received an important message from Bean...
Dear Aunty Linsey, Please e mail daddy straight away and tell him I MUST have a dales pony as soon as possible..Love Bean
