Someone I know fears that their horse may be developing Cushings disease...I thought I would ask in case anyone on here has any advice or experience of it...at the moment the horse seems to have only a woolly coat and no other symptoms..Many thanks Leann x

Quest had a form of Cushings. Happy to answer any questions. The symptoms do vary from horse to horse. Quest never had the typical curly, wooly coat. I found the Yahoo "metabolic horse" site very helpful pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/TheMetabolicHorse/

Prince our Shetland had laminitis, and then in his latter years, got cushings too. He had a big curly coat, and would sweat a lot at times, plus he drank a lot of water. I noticed above his eyes bulged out too.
Having said that, he was on no medication, and carried on for a few years without it affecting him unduly. Towards the end he did go very thin.
I think it affects horses in different ways as to how severe their symptoms. My farrier told me he sees a lot of ponies with laminitis and cushings at the same time.

I had an old welshy with Cushings, and she had been badly laminitic prior to that.
She never put on much weight, had bulging eyes and a mane and tail a Dales would die for!! She also had a very thick coat and in the summer it went very long and fly-away - about 9 inches long between her front legs.
She had no medication at all from when I got her (1994) until she died in 1997 aged 36. Right up until she died she was lively and very happy. She died naturally in the field in the late summer, just lay down for a sleep and forgot to wake up.

A friend of ours pony developed cushings in late 20's. Its coat was very woolly and curly always reminded us of a giant poodle - we use to have to clip him every week through the summer as coat got so thick. He also was laminitic and eyes did bulge. He happily lived well into his 30's.

My mare had cushings. The main signs were she was drinking more than normal, had bulges above her eye, and started to lsoe weight in the winter which was not normal for her. She never got a thick woolly coat at all, although the winter coat did take longer to malt. There are many different symptons and levels of cushings.

I'm beginning to think Choc may have Cushings, I hope I'm wrong.
Thanks for the link Pam.

Oh Lucy, I hope you are mistaken but even if not, they can continue to live a very happy and active life once you have things under control.

Thanks Pam Lots of interesting reading to do. I think I should get the blood tests done, probably when the vet's coming out anyway to do jabs in March. Pones create one life long learning opportunity!

my dales has cushing's. she was diagnosed about 2yrs ago. she was very overweight and started with laminitis, once it was confirmed with blood tests (i think the vet's thought they would be clear as she has no other signs of cushing's) she started on pergolide an has been great ever since, lost loads of weight and now lives out. i'm really heartened to hear that many ponies live to a ripe old age even with cushing's, looks like she'll be keeping me occupied for a long time!

Had Choc's tests done. She has early Cushings. Bugger!
Now need to decide whether to try alternative route (agnus castus, etc) or go with the pergolide. My heart says do the herbs route and keep retesting to get some scientific data on the herbs, but my head says go to pergolide asap. My OH says shoot her now and save all the expense and worry! (Only joking of course!)
What to do?
