Some 6 or 7 Christmasess ago when kay and I fiirst took over the yard.A black cat strolled in on Christmas day and demanded to be fed. Ofcourse being Christmas we relented and found ourselves with a new resident,as he was an expert mouser and ratter it was good to have him around. One day the farmer popped in and informed us that our 'stray' was the farm cat and was in fact called Buddy. From that day on Bud stayed with us and went into a serious retirement!! Apart from giving up on vermin control,he also gave up walking unless he had to,he would rather cadge a lift in a barrow or even a bucket!
Several weeks before Christmas 09,I found Buddy looking very ill.He couldn't walk, his pupils where dilated and his colour awful - it seemed he had a minor stroke. We all helped him as much as we could even hand feeding him tiny morsals of tuna and drops of water.Within 10days buddy was his old self and bouncing-big-time!!
On Tuesday 5th of January I went down to the yard.Buddy made an awful fuss stating he hadn't been fed for weeks are worked his way through THREE breakfasts!! In the evening kay went down and again Bud did his 'feeeeed me' act and conned TWO dinners from her.
On the Wednesday 6th Jan I went down to the yard,it had just started to slightly snow,Bud's routine was to climb out of the barn at dawn,go to the muck heap for his 'ablutions'and make his way down the track in order to cadge a lift back in my car(he loved going in cars) as I walked towards the yard I saw a small black object,my first thought was that someone had dropped a scarf but as I approached I realised it was Buddy.he looked like he had been about to take another step and had been felled in his tracks.I picked him up,he was so sleek and full! His coat was shining and he looked at peace.I believe that he must have had another stroke or heart attack and had not suffered at all.
Buddy was 2 months off his 19th birthday,he had outlived his sister Holly by 2 years. We have buried him in the sunny corner of the field as Buddy had never left the farm and now never will. He was a very special cat. It is the end of an era.
