Hi Guys ;D Can anyone recommend any decent saddle panniers please? I went out with a friend for a 2 hours hack (didn't realise it was going to be so long...) and came back very de-hydrated. I was quite ill for a couple of hours so I've decided to invest in some decent panniers so I can carry drinks/chocolate and perhaps room to stash my fleece etc. I'd like something pretty heavy-duty as I'm "hoping" if I can gather enough confidence to go on a few longer treks with Floyd and don't want to get caught out again. I know that you guys will scour the internet and come up with some good suggestions. xxx

Performance Equestrian - www.performance-equestrian.com/cat/CatIndex.asp?d=2&s=1Last year I did 90 km of the Penine Bridleway using the Perfeg twin pommel bags, they have been improved since then and I used the new design at the weekend and they were great. They don't move around even in canter.

I think if I ever manage to go on a "horsey holiday" I will invest in the Deluxe stowaway bag. It looked really roomy just a little expensive for my "starter bag" I think I may put it on my Xmas list though.........

You can get water bottle holders too that fasten onto the front D rings on the saddle.

I can highly recommend the Stowaway Deluxe Pommel bag from the Performance Equestrian link. It fastens to the saddle easily and if the straps are tensioned enough they keep the weight of the bags away from the horse's shoulders. The part of the bags which may touch the horse is lined with a fleecy material thus minimising the chance of rubbing.
I don't carry my phone in it though as suggested in the description . . . if I part company from my horse at least I won't be watching my means of summoning assistance disappearing into the wide blue yonder!!

The Stowaway bags do look great. I completely agree about keeping your mobile phone on your person, mine is always in my jacket pocket just in case I part company with Floyd. It's amazing the people who carry them in saddle bags though isn't it?

Thanks for putting this post on Caroline. I have saddle bags for my western saddle, but wanted something for my english one so when we start longer hacks (and hopefully joining up with Dalesfans again) I can take all my essentials. Great to have such positive recommendations.
