I have my highland mare and 11 month old foal (there are good reasons for not weaning her earlier) in a paddock with my 3yo highland and my aged cob mare. Due to the lack of rain they are rapidly running out of grass so I am thinking of taking the opportunity to wean by taking mum plus one other to a field with more grass. I know ideally she wouldn't have too much grass to help milk dry up, but I will strip graze it and a bit of grass will hopefully help her forget her baby. Anyway, my question is, who do I leave in bare paddock with the foal, 3yo or old mare?
Edited to add that foal and 3yo are both fillies.

She'll probably prefer the 3 year old for all the reasons Heather said, but the older mare would be more likely to dish out discipline if needed.
It's a tough call. Think I'd be inclined to leave her with whichever one she's bonded to the most.
Good luck.
