Fiona and Lass both scanned in-foal today and the really good news for us is that Becky (Packsfield Ella Beck) has finally held to service and is well on her way to being 3 months pregnant. In the past Becky has had a full-term false pregnancy, then last year her hormones were all over the place. A winter on Vitex agnus castus seems to have done the trick and we're looking forward to our first baby from her, fingers-crossed. So that's 4 Dales foals for us (hopefully) next year. Gem (Manorian Moonstone) is due first in early April. On the downside, our blue roan mare Pagan (Lowkbers Foxglove) has failed to hold to service, despite Wilf's best and concerted efforts all season. Vet says she is conceiving but her body doesn't recognise the embryo as being part of her, so triggers an immune response and destroys the embryo in the first 7 days post conception. She was sold to us as barren, so it's no great surprise, but it's still a shame because she finds the other mares' foals fascinating and would clearly have liked to be a mum Wilf and King are not quite so happy as they don't want to shut up shop quite yet

That's good news about Becky- can you have a chat with my Becky please?! Shame about Pagan- do the vets ever use metformin in horses as I've heard of it used in humans as it sometimes prevents miscarriage in women with PCOS?

... do the vets ever use metformin in horses as I've heard of it used in humans as it sometimes prevents miscarriage in women with PCOS? I know that metformin is used in horses to treat insulin resistance but have never heard of it's use in equine reproduction. Will go and google it now To be honest, we cannot afford to spend any more money on diagnosis or treatment for Pagan and she is knocking-on a bit for a maiden mare, so I think we'll call it a day and try and get her driving again. Don't give up with your Becky, just send her to stud a bit earlier next year. It has taken us 3 years to get Becky in-foal, and there's still no guarantee she'll go to full term, but it's worth the effort and the wait. Heather - broody is good Your babies are all growing-up now, so you need a foalie around the place! Is Tola the intended mum?

I think it's off licence but has had some good results. It was just a thought. I'm not sure about my Becky- she's 17, had a foal 3 years ago but this time had a lot of fluid post AI. Wouldn't clear and they decided it was an infection. Swabbed and all that grew was fungal. Treated with an antifungal but a few days later there was more fluid The vet wasn't hopeful and said all we could really try was 10 days worth of antibiotics / antifungals but it was going to cost and even then he wasn't hopeful. I may have her scanned early next year to see what it looks like but she'll be 18..

Good news about your scans. Sorry about Pagan. Have a mare myself who we cannot breed from, and I was sad about that. But we no longer have the worry of is she or isn't she going to be in foal, and are enjoying riding and driving her again. I am sure Pagan will enjoy driving.

Congratulations Helen, 4 foals for you for 2011. Just think of the exciting time ahead, feeling for the foals moving and seeing the mares increase in size. Sorry about Pagan, maybe next year? The boys will be fine, Duke has already accepted that nothing is on offer at the moment but got to hope it stays like that Can't wait to see your foals next year, healthy mares and foals please, lots and lots of photos and lots and lots of sleepless nights ahead!

Thanks guys We've tried Regumate (as did one of her previous owners over a 2 year period) but our vet doesn't think her embryo loss is due to her progesterone levels, so we've probably just wasted our money We'll possibly try again next year, with minimal intervention, and just see if anything happens. Emily - mentioned metformin to my vet and he's going to look into the research, so thanks for the tip
