The vet has now confirmed that Coltie has cushings or as he put it is 'cushingoid' Coltie is going onto medication but has anyone any ideas re feed - types rather than brands as my feed merchant can't always get a particular 'make or named brand'
Colt is 12.2. M&M (sorry not a dales.)28 years old Very dodgey teeth(not many left!) he has a good appitite and is in light work, out daytime and in at night. He has lost some condition during the past month due to his cushings symptoms.
His only real symptom is the weeing - so no problem with heavy coat or sweats but the vet has said beware of lammi, a cushings nightmare and Coltie has all the atributes(small, M&M,and greedy) Any suggestions greatly received.
Oh and we won't tell Pearl who is only going to get a handful of nuts and chaff and a carrott..................

I fed my Cushings mare the same as everyone else got, and she lasted til she was 36. She had lami once before I had her, but never for the 4 years she was with me. She was always lean and had a very silky soft and very long coat.
Grass nuts are great for maintaining weight, I use them on all of mine all winter, and soak them for 24 hours into a vile looking green soup but they scoff it up.

I got a lot of help with feeding Quest from Jackie Taylor's Yahoo metabolic horse group pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/TheMetabolicHorseAswell as discussing individual horses there are files/tables of safe feeds to give and treatment/management plans. Quest also became quite thin due to his Cushings but I had to be very careful not to feed anything that might spark off a lami episode.
