Linda - we just collected a load of hay which was stored at Jill's by a local farmer. He had another lot somewhere else but I'm fairly sure it is already sold. I can ask around for you.
I'm wary about feeding haylage but that is probably me being a bit neurotic after Quest. If you go down that route, you will be better getting the big haylage bales for the amount you will need to feed. It will work out cheaper. If our hay looks like running short again I am going to see if I can source some good straw to mix in.

Trying out some staw mixed in the hay too Pam. I managed to source some hay and some barley straw but OMG what a price! I am paying three times as much as usual!
Which straw is better? Oat, wheat or barley?

Oat is best, then barley for feeding, impaction colics more likely with wheat.

I'm doing the same now, Linda. The grass simply isn't growing, due to lack of rain I guess so just picked up a trailer load of straw to feed with the hay.

We've fed between a third and half their fibre diet as barley straw for years now, it saves on costs and helps keep their weight down.
We use barley as they just pig out and trough continuously at the oat straw and end up like blimps and high as kites. The wheat is more of an irritant to their guts and is quite harsh so we use the barley as a compromise between these two things but better for them than lots of hay.
