I was about to invest in some new Liveryman Arena clippers, as now Alf is starting to do a bit of work, he is getting quite warm.
But someone suggested that as the Arenas are only classed as medium duty, I might need some heavy duty clippers due to the long thick winter coats that Dales ponies get.
I'd be interested to know what everyone else uses?, and do I really need heavy duty clippers? or would mediums do?

I invested in a pair of heavy duty clippers. I use them at least 6 times a year to keep Bea clipped and although he's not a Dales he has a very thick coat. They power through his coat with no problems at all and mean I can get the job done within his patience span. I have a pair of Hauptner 2000 clippers. They're 8 years old now and have never given me a moment's trouble. Try this website (they're also very helpful if you speak to them): www.peasridge.co.uk/acatalog/CLIPPERS.htmlThese are the ones I have (third ones down): www.peasridge.co.uk/acatalog/Heavy_Duty.html

i got a pair of liveryman harmony clippers last year which i've used about 4 times, each time they whizzed through his coat no problem! obviously the blades are a bit smaller so it must take a bit longer to do but i've had no problems at all and theyre not in the slightest 'heavy duty'.. i'd say if you're only doing the one pony they'd be fine

What blades to you all use? I have medium ones but I think with my heavy duty clippers a course set would be better?

I've got Lister Neon clippers - they did Magic really easily (the pone and only time he was clipped - not my decision but that's a long story...) they manage really well with Apple (Connemara) and my french friend has had them for a few months now for her showjumpers - note to self - must get them back...

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, very useful. Suzie I had originally decided on Hauptners, as they get a fantastic review online, but a friend told me she sold hers as the adjustment was too difficult, which is why I changed my mind for the Liveryman ones, do you find the adjustment difficult with yours?

The tensioning gets some getting used to, but I've not had any problems. I spoke to a nice man at Peasridge and he told me how to do it - well, it's more of a feel really and you listen to the sound the clippers make. I don't get hung up about it and all has been fine so far.
