Well, we're no wiser really. The original site of the rash is looking better but he's got new bits appearing. Because all the skin scrape results came back clear I took harvey over to Tanya's yesterday to cheer him up and to let others have a look and see what they think. It all looks so atypical that I decided to have a seccond opinion and let Oakham vets have a lok at hijm today as they were due at Tanya's and have a dermatological expert. Well, still no answers. All the vet could say is that the symptoms are very unusual. He said I can't rule out ringworm because the culture would take about a week to comfirm - unless the lab in question is using a new technique he knows nothing about. He thinks they will have studied the samples under a microscope but not grown cultures. The vet agrees the possible culprits still could be: ringworm, rain scald, allergy to anything including the fertilizer run off and also the haylage. Another thing occured to me - Harvey had his booster jab March 21st so something else to put in the equation. The vet took more skin scrapes and hair samples and also some tiny core biopsies. Harvey was a star! The vet was amazed at how good he was. The results could take up to 2 weeks to come through and in the meantime I'm to treat him with a ring worm wash just in case. He understood why i didn'[t want to try a steroid injection just now but said steroid cream might help if it proves to be an allergic reaction to something, So please send lots of Dalesfans vibes for poor Harvey.

Loads of vibes coming Harvey's way - and for you too. Try not to fear the worst If it's ringworm, it's a large area! I've only seen the horses at the yard who have it and it comes up in single patches, not over a huge area like Harvey has. Steroid cream would be better than an injection wouldn't it?

Poor Harvey!! Connie gets ringworm on a regular basis...I have found the a product called Mycrophyt seems to clear it up best ...what did the vet prerscribe Pam? I think Imaverol is another good one too.

I'm certainly glad you've gotten the second opinion, and good of him to tell you the culture for a ringworm would not be back yet. I also agree with treating it as the utter worst case scenario and working backwards from there. I have completely separate grooming kits for Blossom and Galahad. Nothing is shared, not even the hoof pick (yeah, I'm funny that way), but when Galahad came down with the mystery 'thing' on his side I took even greater precautions between the two. I made sure to bleach, peroxide or at the very least wash my hands after applying the Bag Balm to Galahad's sides. I also did Galahad's treatments after I was finished with Blossom, in short, I tried to minimize spreading whatever 'it' was from Galahad to Blossom and to other parts of Galahad as well. What a Harvey is to stand for all the poking prodding and stabbing I hope they can find the source of it soon!

Poor Harvey. I hope you get an answer soon Pam. How good of Harvey to be so well behaved whilst they took the biopsies. We know that Sigs is related to an allergy now, but we are still waiting on the results of the screening tests.
His breathing seems to be improving so I am wondering if it is a particular type of pollen.

I hope you found out what it is soon, as the worst bit is not knowing. Good boy harvey for being such a star with all the tests.

I think Imaverol is another good one too. Thanks Leann, I'll make note of that if the tests come back positive. The vet left me with Imaverol which I used today, but not on his biopsy sites. Like Sue, I really think it is very unlikely it is ringworm. I suppose the one good thing is that Harvey doesn't seem particularly bothered by all the fuss.

His breathing seems to be improving so I am wondering if it is a particular type of pollen. Jacqui, I'm so glad Sigs is improving. Both vets who have seen Harvey think his problem could be pollen related. How did your vets confirm Sigs had an allergy related problem? Today's vet said the skin biopsy results would show whether cells were reacting to an allergen. He took samples of slightly de-pigmented areas where the pimples/scabs had been. Is that what happened with Sigs?

I'm so sorry, I meant to ring you today Pam.... how is Harvey today? And how are you? xxx Harvey is fine in himself. I think his skin might be looking a bit better and he certainly isn't bothered by it despite having staples in his bum from the biopsy sites. He is bored though and desperate to be doing something so I might start leading him out in hand while I can't ride him. I'm fine too, thanks. Just wish the biopsy results would hurry up.
