Our horses are kept just in own little groups. Wormers are so expensive now I was wondering how good just sending samples for counting are? Also is it suitable for all age groups? All advise really welcome...

I've been using worm counts for my group for some years now and find it a big cost saving plus I'm not pumping my horses full of chemicals when they don't need it. It also helps in general with the build up of resistant worms.
Mine are kept in a closed group and I poo pick daily. Mine always come back with the lowest score (no eggs seen) except for little Lilly who had a score of "low" the first time I did her. She is now totally clear.
The worm counts don't cover tape worms though. You need a blood sample for that. Also the counts won't record encysted worms so you will still need to worm once a year for these with an appropriate wormer. I tend to worm once in the winter to cover bots and encysted red worm.
