Yes. I have my three Dales plus a young horse on 1.2 acres with just straw to top up their fibre intake when they want to and they are STILL fat They are all on as much exercise as they can have, given their ages and physicality.

For the first time ever our 3 are not fat (not that thin either)! It's been hard work achieving.

What is considered the right weight for a dales? I had Andy weighed today he was 575kg ??!! I know he is looking "well" wouldnt say he looks overly porky.....

My lad is 14.2hh and comes in at 524kg on tape. Very chunky muscle wise. Depends on height and build i think. To add - harry is still tubby like like his owner.

Robin is around 15 hands and currently 510kg on the tape BUT if I condition score him I would say he is verging on overweight. He carries fat pads behind the shoulder and his neck is beginning to feel a bit hard. No apple-shaped bottom though. I got him down to around 475 kg last year then he over-wintered too well as I had to feed hay whilst grazing buried under snow and ice for weeks. All the weight I got off him went back on and he came out at 540 kg on the tape in February. Going to be hay mixed with straw this winter!! It's a constant struggle to keep the weight off him, not helped by comparing him to a new arrival either - a lovely slender Welsh D mare who looks very like a Dales (apart from the small head and dinky feet!)

They have a HUGE tendency to get fat!!! and usually on air! Mine moved onto my summer paddock in March, and before the grass started growing, so they kept at a decent weight for a while. But now the grass has started growing they are all looking rather too porky for my liking . There are five of them on about 2 acres, there isn't a huge amount of grass but obviously what there is is more than they need ... it's a big battle keeping natives at an acceptable weight!
