Oh no! You've done the right thing in contacting the police - keep hassling them til you get a reply. Try not to panic though - I think I'm right in saying the scares last year with ponies being marked to "pinch" by plaiting were not proven and was thought to be spread by rumours. Also sometimes a rough plait can appear naturally in our ponies long manes. My Frankie is very good at doing this. Fingers crossed there is an innocent explanation.

In the local Berwickshire News last week there was a report about a horse who had its mane cut off - this was near Duns. It also mentioned reports of plaits appearing in horses manes previously in the area. The police were involved and a green car was seen leaving the yard where the event occurred. The yard owner said that the owner of the pony was very upset. I do hope your pony remains safe and unharmed.

It is worrying, I hope it's just been a wind plait, is everything ok this morning.
Corabella, I hadn't heard about the horse in Duns - that's a bit too close to home, think I might have to start getting the Berwickshire paper

Last summer I went up to the yard to find a neat plait in Ebonys mane and was really upset that someone had been 'handling' my horse. I told the yard owner who put a note on the board telling people to leave other folks horses alone. Since then Ive moved yards to a much smaller, quieter one, where there are only 4 mares and Ebonys stable is out on a limb away from others. Over the months Ive noticed a few plaits in her main and now realise that they are quite natural, even tho I dont know how they can be done so precisely. I obviously dont know how your horses plait got there but just to let you know they do occur quite naturally.

Another report in our local paper the Berwickshire News about reports of plaits in horses manes - this time in the Alloa, Biggar and Peebles areas of SCotland. The SSPCA has issued a warning about suspected horse thieves operating in Scotland.

If it is any comfort, our local horsewatch has been contacted by a 'witch' who reckons this may be to do with a harmless pagan thingy and not necessary marking horses for theft..and I have heard that it is sometimes done as a funny thing to scare horsey people!!.fingers crossed. x
