i've done all the slateyfords listed on NED and found out a couple of weird things. one being that diamond and pearl who were full brother and sister had two foals together and also according to ned heather had 2 foals in 1998 about 3 months apart, i'm sure one of them must be a typo.

yes, there seems to be a problem there.I will try to look in the stud books when I have time.

With some studs it's not uncommon to find full brother and sister matings and for daughters to be put back to their fathers. I remember seeing one stallions papers and every single mating going back four generations was of this type It's not something I'd ever do as it's horrendously unsound from a healthy genetics viewpoint but it did happen. I think it happens less now but I couldn't be sure.

I have time to look - supposed to be packing my hospital case but that's dull You are right - Slateyford Diamond and Slateyford Pearl are full brother and sister. They actually had 3 foals together - Slateyford Spartan 98/121G, Slateyford Dice 98/11 (but was actually born in 1997) and Garsdale Dora. "Line-breeding" if it works, "in-breeding" if it doesn't but I think most people nowadays would consider a mating like that too close for comfort? Slateyford Heather is listed on Grassroots (the DPS database) as having 2 foals in 1998. Susie born 6/7/98 and Daisy born 30/4/98. If it's not an error all I can think is maybe she "aborted" Daisy as part of a twin pregnancy but the foal lived (however she is registered as having died a year later) but carried Susie to full term? Maybe some of the "older" Dales people on here will remember? Good luck with your research - it can get quite fascinating! Best to join the DPS and gain access to Grassroots for the most reliable info though

I wouldnt have thought a twin born 3 months before the other one could survive.
We have a similar thing with one of our ponies, she was born late August and the following April her full brother was born. One of the dates is simply incorrect, but which one we don't know. Perhaps its a similar thing and Daisy was actually born the year before? Or Susie a year later?

I wouldnt have thought a twin born 3 months before the other one could survive. I agree Penny. There's 67 days between the alleged birthdates, so it would only have been possible if the second foal was considerably overdue and the first one considerably premature. It is just about possible though. Several years ago a member of Midland Heavy Horse Association had a Shire cross mare that had twin foals born 7 weeks apart - the first foal around 320 days. It survived but was always weedy. The second one around 370 days - a massive 4 weeks late and it was normal size Far more likely to be an error though

Yes there have, the blue peter pony (I think he was called Jet) was a Dales pony and was a twin but its too early to think of its prefix now

Wasn't the Blue Peter Dales Pony Raygill John? (From the deep recesses of my mind, so I may be wrong!) helen, that's fascinating about the shire twins!

Yes Rosebarr Grey Rosie was - she's the mum of one of my girls Rosebarr Sara. ;D It is in brackets after her name on the passport pedigree page - I always wondered if the other one had survived, presumed it had otherwise it would not have been mentioned. Soooo, I have heard the theory that twins runs thru the grey dales pony line??? Is it an urban myth? Sorry dalebob, am hijacking your thread slightly
