Am thinking of investing in 2 for King and Pagan's field shelter. There's a Dfs thread dating from 2006 where a couple of people were using them.
Is there anyone here using them now? Thoughts please, good or bad?

I nearly bought one at a car boot on Sun but it was twisted and huge so must have been the horse size - I had images of Prince/Trevor trying to climb in to get the last little bits Sorry that doesn't help you one bit does Helen ;D

Good and bad reviews which doesn't help you i'm afraid, some horses get on fine and no mess, but had two at a yard I worked at,, and bloody nightmare, they draged all the hay/haylage out and trod all into their beds,, they actually made less mess with the haylage just on the floor, so think it will depend on the individual horse/pony as to if they are going to work for you.

Sorry that doesn't help you one bit does it Helen ;D Actually it probably does Zelda, because that suggests I only need the pony sized one for vertically challenged Pagan (13.3hh)? King is a hand taller, so I was planning on the bigger one for him? Do they seem tough? Don't like the sound of it being twisted! Pagan rubs her bum on all stable fixtures and King investiagtes everything to the minutest detail, so I was hoping they would be robust? As to mess - I can't see Pagan allowing even a single strand of hay to escape her stomach

Tom thought it was twisted because it had been stored with something heavy on top, it seemed fairly sturdy Helen

I used to use them for all ours. For anything under 15hh I used the pony size one and it worked well.

:)At Tillly and her hen friend. She always seemed to like the hens when she was here!!
I have seen quite a few hay bars at the local horse and tack auction, and they go for low money. Do wonder if people find their horses do not like them and thats why they end up at the sale?
Did Karen have a haybar for one of her stallions l- I am sure he sat in it?!!

I tend to feed on the floor or in tight hay nets, I've never tried a hay bar. No use to you at all!!!!

Ummmm - scrambled egg, reclining stallions and multiple cast-offs at car-boots. I'm thinking "hay dumped on the floor" as per usual, might be a better option

If you put some 2x1 on the walls as guide rails you can slide a piece of plywood across the corner. It's far cheaper than a hay bar and you can lift the ply out to clean behind. A stables where I had Drummer one week when out competing had these and they worked really well. You can also slide different height ply in depending on size of pony in stable/shelter.
