Thought I had bough a mineral block without molasses but when I looked at the ingredients molasses is the first one! Intended to use this as a distraction during poo picking - just take the lid off while I was busy then take it away. But should I use it if it has sugar in? Do people use them and are they really necessary? This one is described as all purpose mineral lick with garlic, oils and live yeast. I have given a large salt lick in the barn - which they did use a lot and drank masses too, prob not unconnected.

To be honest Elaine I wouldn't use it, they'll be getting enough sugar from the grass, you could try scattering a few of handfuls of high fibre cubes in the grass instead - Spillers ones are usually stocked most places

I use Rockie blocks, they are not molassed and the horses only seem to use them if they need them - they don't go at them and at them if you know what I mean.
I steer clear of the molassed ones as they are too palatable and the horses can't resist them.

I also steer clear of the licks with molasses in. I am convinced they contributed to my old cob getting laminitis many years ago. Perhaps the place you bought it will exchange it for a salt based lick. Zelda's idea of scattering a few nuts is a good one.

You could also get a couple of these they work really well with my lot for keeping them occupied when needed www.rideaway.co.uk/ELICO-EQUINE-DECAHEDRON/default.aspx just don't fill them full lol and make sure you don'tleave any nuts in if they are not being used for a long period as they are really difficult to clean - I know as I left some nuts in them

The decahedron things that Zelda recommends are the things I was trying to describe on the phone Alternatively a bucket of chaff (straw based) would also keep occupied. The only problem with this is you may end up with an even more in your face pony that you can't do anything with unless you have food. I think the decahedron thing is better.

Thanks everyone - not using the lickit. Went to local agric merchants and they stock Rockies - they had one left - Baby Yellow Horse Lick. Also will send for the decahedron dispenser. I do have lots of apples at the moment and have thrown a couple these on the ground as opposed to hand feeding to avoid developing further crowding.
