I feel guilty after reading mickeys post as Cali only got bit of chaff and sugar beet plus hay last winter but she was still feeding from mum as well Cali is now 17 months and touching 14hh but please could somebody with more experience tell me what I should be feeding her this winter? She will have hay twice daily but I really have not a clue which hard feed to give her. All advice gratefully received

All Penley has had is Dengie Hi Fi Lite with a BIG plastic mug of stud balancer along with hay. He is STILL feeding from Mum though at nearly two and a half! At the end of last winter I did add a little of the ground linseed that Zelda recommended though.

I just fed mine on chaff and a basic balancer all through their growing years. I like to make sure they have sufficient vit/min to grow sturdily and support healthy body systems to develop. Our soil is also very mineral deficient which means the grass will be as well.
The basic balancer does this without over stuffing them and causing them to go wild with growth.

sorry to be a bit thick but what basic balancer do you use? Our feed merchants I know is pretty basic but I know they do stud balancer, would that be too much?

I'm replying via my iPhone so apologise for any weird typos. I used Top Spec Original Balancer for the first three years, in my opinion it's one of the highest specification ones out there without straying into feeding stud balancers that I was a bit nervous about as mine all seemed to have too fast growth spurts.
Now they are slightly older I've got them on half rations of the lower quality Spillers Balancer along with a powder vit/min supplement fed at half rate.

Between 9-12 months we switch our babies from Top Spec Stud Balancer with Alfa-A, to Top Spec Lite Balancer plus Alfa-A.

all our youngstock, mares and stallions are on 1 1/4lbs of Baileys stud balancer each day, for life. this is all most of them have as it gives them the nutrients needed to utilize the grass properly.the geldings swop to baileys lo=cal when they are adult.
