Hi, Alice was backed and started earlier this year and is going well. However - she is very fussy in her mouth and is constantly trying to get her tongue over the bit. When she is moving she's better and is not hard to stop or steer, but once you halt she's off again mouthing and leaning
We tried a few types at the start and the one she accepted best was a happy mouth straight bar with fulmer sides.
Her mother Doris was just the same and she ended up always in a pelham and would never tolerate a jointed bit . I have a variety of bits in the drawer to try .... what would you start with??

What about a straight bar happy mouth? Magic has always been ridden in a straight bar (plain rubber one as well) and seems to like them. Thats what he had been using when he came to me (was broken in one). Now my daughter rides him sometimes and as he can be rather forward going with her we have a happy mouth 3 ring gag, he's ridden in the middle ring)
Good luck x

Lucky you're fortunate to have some material at hand, so you don't have to buy bits that go into that drawer when they don't work! I'd just try each one and I'm sure Alice will let you know which works best!

I find Harley goes well in a Tom Thumb bit - sweet iron with copper rings, It is a gag, but you can have the reins on the top ring so lose the gag action. He is a terrible leaner but can't lean on this one and seems to like it.
Have you thought about a hackamore? Lady was awful with a bit, tried loads of different ones with no joy, so we've gone for an English hackamore with great results.

I do find the NS lozenge bits lovely for youngsters and I also like the myler bit with a low port on their comfort snaffle or the hanging cheek version with same mouthpiece.
