Sonny is 13 (Dales) & was diagnosed with arthritis approx six weeks ago. He had the xrays and diagnostics that showed sidebone, arthritic changes in the coffin bones and some abnormalities in the navicular bones (both front feet). He has had steriod & lubricant injections into both coffin joints and has wedge pads between hooves and shoes to raise his heels & is also wearing magnetic boots overnight. Hes turned out daily for approx 10 hours and is being brought back into work slowly. The vet came back last week to check up on him and thought there had definitely been an improvement. I feel like he has improved, he is tripping up less and feels to be less pottery than he was. So...now the question, the vets recommended Synequin supplement which he has been having daily, I have also added MSM. At £130 a tub for the Synequin alone this is not cheap and whilst the insurance will cover this for the first year I am wondering about the future. When I discussed this with the vet she said that as we had not seen a dramatic improvement that I should feel free to try other supplements instead so I would love to hear about other peoples experiences with these types of supplements. A friend has also recommended Zerobute? Again discussed with the vet & she is happy for me to try. I do have some bute from the vets but will only use this if/when he is struggling. I should also add that if I cannot find a supplement that works better than the Synequin I will be biting the bullet & paying for it!

I haven't tried Synequin but a few people on here have with good results. I must admit I'm a bit dubious about all these supplements with glucosamine, ever since recent human trials showed it didn't really help. (can't remember the details now) But people swear by certain joint supplements although they don't all work for all horses. Trial and error I guess and we all want to do the best for our ponies.
Some one on the Saddle Up forum has made a joint supplement spread sheet which is worth having a look at. Supplese Gold comes out as having the same glucoseamine/chondroitin spec as Synequin but with added MSM and HA plus it is cheaper.

Thanks everyone , harveydales that spreadsheet is fantastic! I am leaning towards trying the Suppleaze Gold or Premerflex (a friends chiropractor recommended this).
