Do any breeders have any experience of using the drug MISOPROSTROL to relax the cervix of their mares? We have a maiden mare who cycles normally, produces good sized follicles and ovulates correctly, but her cervix remains tightly shut - it cannot even be manually dilated - so despite the best efforts of King (all of last year) and Wilf (2 cycles this year) the sperm cannot pass through to have any chance of fertilising the egg Whilst I can speak reasonable french for day-to-day existence, I find it difficult to follow detailed/specialist conversations such as this with my french vet, so if anyone has any experience of this treatment, it would be a great help I think my vet said that the drug is not licensed for use in horses, but is available in tablet form for humans, so these would have to be crushed and mixed with a cream to apply directly onto the cervix?

I believe they just insert a tablet in humans, will have a look when I get home tonight.

sometimes it can take hours to manually dilate the cervix, we have only had one which needed this.

According to my vet, this cervix is like Fort Knox - impregnable Where's George Clooney and the Ocean's 11 team when you need them Julie - do you mean the vet needs to fiddle around inside the mare for hours, or that it can take hours for the cervix to open after the vet has finished fiddling?

Had a look, in humans the tablets (which are oral tablets) are used whole- not crushed and made into a cream and just placed like a pessary.
