Finally had to say goodbye to my beautiful Welsh girl Briallen, she was only 7yo but her problems finally got the better of her. She was big and bolshy but oh so lovable. I had her 2 years and that time was filled with issues and injuries, the worst being a fall in the field 18mts ago which resulted in a torn meniscus in her stifle, she had a year of box rest and an operation at Rossdales. She coped very badly with box rest but did come through it and came back to soundness only to find her headshaking which she had all the time I owned her due to a kick in the head, got so bad that she became unridable. She had her last 3 months of unrestricted turn out, which was heaven for her after all the months of box rest, but she was becoming increasingly distressed even in the field and my vet likened it to her having permanent bad headache/neuralgia. She took Emerald under her wing and she is missing her, calling and staring into the distance. We had tried everything non invasive and decided the kindest thing for her was to let her go.
RIP my lovely girl

So sorry. You tried long and hard for her, then made the kindest decision, but it's never an easy choice xxx
Run free Briallen.

I'm so sorry to read this but what a lucky girl to have someone who gave her as good a quality of life as she could have and made sure she didn't suffer when she became unhappy.

Thank you all so much, I'm overwhelmed that people are still reading this and offering support over a month later, also by the support offered between members, its the first time I've taken part in any on line blog if that's the right word and am getting hooked. For the last 10 days I have been in Coventry with my elderly parents, who are both now in hospital after both having 2 separate falls but have now got social services involved to assess them before discharge as they can no longer manage on their own, and it was lovely to log on this morning to find 2 more messages of support. I was also lovely to be greeted with very big whinnies and obvious delight to see me from both ponies last night, I had missed them so much and I'm so lucky to have 2 good friends who have looked after the ponies so well while I've been away, so have had 1 less thing to worry about especially as I'll be back next week for S S assessment and likely to be backwards and forwards a lot over the next few months (3 hour journey each way) I'm just grateful that this didn't happen while Briallen was on box rest as it would have been very difficult to leave her under those circumstances.
Looking forward to having a few days now to work with Emerald and possibly get a few more rides in, not sure whether to keep up with 10 - 15min rides when I am at home or just take her for walks in hand and pick up the ridden work again when I am finally back at home full time, as she has only had 4 rides since backing her then nothing for last 10 days.
