Hi, I have a lovely new Dales gelding, 5 years old with what looked like a blocked tear duct, but the vet referred me to a specialist who says it's a melanoma so it has to come out along with his third eyelid. Apparently he said it was common in Fell & Dales ponies but I can't see anything online that backs this up. Has anyone ever had any problems like this? Am hoping everything resolves after his op in November. And very glad I took out insurance!

No, certainly not a genetic thing with the breed and I've never come across this at all in a Dales or Fell. I would think it is very rare indeed. Can you get a second opinion? I had a Welsh Cob/TB cross who had what looked like a melanoma in his eye but it was in fact a cyst on the iris and never caused him any problems. I do know of horses who have had to have an eye removed and cope perfectly well. It probably affects us owners more than it does the horse.

My pony (who is also 5) came with what we thought was a usual blocked tear duct but it turns out he has an extra tube that runs down to his nose. It took a few times to flush it out but fingers crossed it is okay now.

I've not come across it, or heard of it, in Dales ponies. How does it present? Is it basically a watery eye, and then investigations to find out the cause?
Is he a grey pony? Just wondering because of melanomas being more common in greys (of any breed)?
Hope all goes well with the op.
