I was looking at cute Irish setter puppy videos on a breeder's website on the Oregon coast. They live down in Reedsport, which is where the original elk herd is for the Oregon coast. Funny enough, their herd was only the one and still only 40 and didn't seem to bother their fencing; however, the elk had somehow figured out how to open their mailbox and would sometimes eat the mail! they win, hands down!! Don't ask me what or why the elk thought the mail tastes so yummy, I'm only grateful the ones around here aren't interested in munching on mine. The mind boggles....

Oh heck, I hope your elk don't learn that trick! Who would have thought elk would be such a problem!

Ha ha. It would be good if they were selective and only chomped on the bills Are you getting a little red puppy then Debbie?

Morning Debbie
Very funny about the mail-eating elk. Maybe the postbox owner should add some mustard or chilli powder to an envelope and leave it in the box to try to dissuade the big blighters!
Re your search for a new puppy. I have nothing personal against red setters but I wondered if you fully realise just how daft and energetic they are until they are at least 11 years old! Certainly not my choice of dog anyway, as I prefer a dog that at least listens and understands what you are saying to it - even if it is not 100% obedient!
I think all the brains of the Irish setters was bred out when they ceased being used for work and became a desirable show and town-dwelling dog. The English setter is much quieter and loving - even if not over-endowed with brains. A friend's sister has managed to keep a strain of the very old fashioned working Red and White Setters going which I think also come from Ireland. Good luck anyhow.

Let me clarify no new puppies here, too much on my plate at the moment. I was only looking at the videos because they're adorable. I've had an Irish Setter, and Mandy came from working gun dogs, so I fully understand the differences between hunting dogs and the show dogs. Mandy did extremely well in obedience training and we went everywhere together. She even helped me with one of my speeches for a class in college As for the chili pepper or hot mustard, I think it's funny, but I wonder what would happen? Elk tend to stampede when in doubt, I don't think I'd want to be around for that
