Or so windy says Windy Wilson Weather and Road Reports SUDDEN STRATOSPHERIC WARMING - Windy says very soon you're going to hear the so called professionals start to ramble on about - SSW (or SUDDEN STRATOSPHERIC WARMING) . . . . . BUT AS ALWAYS, OR ALMOST ALWAYS, YOU'VE HEARD IT HEAR FIRST !!!! So, without going into too much detail, as most of you are struggling with wind direction from a low pressure weather system ha ha ha. . . . . . . Sudden stratospheric warming means that the 'air' up in the sky between 10km - 50km warms up very quickly over a short period of time, and when this happens, it basically distorts the flow of the JET STREAM . . . . . the Jet Stream weakens, allowing a BLOCKING HIGH to form, which effectively blocks out all this wet pishy weather that's been rolling in off the Atlantic . . . . . . However, what it also does is, it opens up the floodgates to let BITTERLY BITTERLY COLD POLAR / EASTERLY AIR IN . . . . . . . Who can remember the BEAST FAE THE EAST ? LIKE EVERYTHING MOTHER NATURE THROWS AT US - THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE, MERELY AN OBSERVATION THAT I HAVE SOME MOVEMENTS IN MY CHARTS . . . . . . . Today is Monday 6th January . . . . . . Remember you heard it here first !! Hoping for a cold snowy end to January, and a complete whiteout in February. That is all !!

actually I would be quite happy to get rid of all this awful mud, a bit of fresh snow would be a nice change - until it all melts and goes muddy again that is

Nawhh, our snowhouse is gone that would have been a perfect emoticon. I'm so glad hubby and I moved last year back to the Oregon coast. All our relatives back in Missouri have been updating us on how bitterly bad this year's winter has been. It's much like winters I remember from childhood, complete with non stop snows up to a foot each time, freezing rains, ice and now bitter wind that's come down from the Arctic circle yet again. They've been having highs from 0* to 15*F plus winds. This week they say it'll dip down to the negatives and with the wind chills making it well into the -20*Fs. Their heating bills will be frightful, not to mention the feed bills for the livestock. Could be worse, though. I've always wondered how people in Russia survive their vicious winters. Vodka has to help, but still. Bundle up and stay warm everyone

NOOO! I don't like snow; or rather I like it to look at but not when it hangs around for weeks turning to slush and lethal ice and making everything difficult....
and having just booked a long weekend away with a big group of friends in the upper Dales for February I'm really hoping we don't get that much snow or we'll never get there!

I'd like it to stop raining, I'm really fed up with all the mud but am not looking forward to snow, ice an frozen taps and water troughs, I guess we're never happy

I suppose we're bound to get snow at some point. So long as we have another hot summer I don't mind what it does now.

I'm going to say it now, before I change my mind if/when it happens, but I love all of our varied seasons. I couldn't live in a country that was hot year-round. I'm not so keen on the increasing number of "extreme weather events" that we seem to be having now though Zelda - who is Windy Wilson Debbie - I was in Moscow for one very cold Winter. Minus 30 degrees centigrade on a daily basis, dropping to -40 some days. It was tough. You are right; the Russians use vodka as antifreeze. Unfortunately for me, I don't like vodka, so had to make do with a duck-down coat and those hand-warmer tea-bag thingies stuffed in bra, knickers, socks and gloves!!!

I'm sorry Helen, but the thought of you stuffing all those handwarmers everywhere literally left me laughing out loud. Mind you, I won't go anywhere that cold willingly you're made of much tougher stuffs than me. Editing to add, last night we had an extreme storm straight out of Tornado Alley last night...only we're now on the Oregon coast I awoke to "cannon fire" in the middle of the night! Eldon was just a few seconds later telling me what happened. He was awake to see lightening hitting the house across the road from us. He said it was completely lit up. I don't know how they survived, and in daylight I can't see what was hit. As soon as I was semi coherent I thought 'horses!' and flung on my clothes and the second bolt hit before I finished. I started to dart for the back door, but then it hailed very hard. I reckoned the horses would easily be in the barn when the third bolt hit yet again and then the rains came down in sheets. This morning all horses and ponies look tired, but they're safe, and no signs that they were too worried in the night. It has to be said that was a record breaker for us. In the decade we lived here before, we only had lightning once. If we were in Missouri, that would have spawned a tornado, easily. Makes me glad we weren't on the ocean for it!

My goodness, you 'over the water' are really having a pounding at the moment - my thoughts are with you all especially those out in the country trying to cope with animals and isolated elderly neighbours. It does not bear thinking about.
I came across this item on the BBC news website this morning which might be of interest:- the Niagara Falls frozen solid!!!

I just amended this link!! Hope it works now
