Many thanks for the birthday wishes!!! I'm spending a quiet one at home this year, but Eldon's already spoiled me silly with chocolates, roses, lemon meringue pies (yes plural ) a couple of books from one of my favorite authors and a very cool scientific course on Colour. Night before last Eldon and I had to chase a bachelor herd of bull elk from our main pasture. Like teenagers/large groups of guys everywhere, they were trouble trying to happen. At first we were 'live and let live' until they crashed into the fencing next to the house off you go! If you want to fight, take it to the 350 acre section set aside just for you next door! Silly moos.... too much testosterone. Then last night I guess our house mink killed something? Eldon said the sounds came from the sunroom and didn't last long, but was pretty loud. He was keeping up on the couch 'just in case'. Somehow I slept through it all, but if the mink duffed something in the sunroom, she was very tidy about it. I can't see anything amiss. Oh yes, and this morning I've already heard one of our eagles calling, the baby red tailed hawk begging for breakfast, and been watched by a chickadee and the male house finch all in all, I'm pretty happy with my birthday.

Sorry I missed it, but belated Happy Birthday Debbie We had a Red Deer stag crash through some of our fencing a few days ago. He was just a single beast and smaller than your Elk, but still made a big mess, so I would hate to have a herd of them!!!

I've seen those red stags and you have my utter sympathies! Even one can mangle a fence in the space of a sneeze I hope your fence was easy to fix. I was so glad we were able to haze our idiots back over the fencing before they could do more than lower it. As for my birthday, I'm still trying to get over the sweeties seriously, though, I feel sick at the sight of what's left of my chocolates and there's a looming last piece of pie that Eldon insists is mine Did I mention what happened with Rita whilst I was reading in the sunroom? She's our greediest horse/pony, mother of the appaloosa colt, and honestly, she's really come into her own since he's left. She's still greedy, though So I'm sat on the sofa, reading my birthday present book, and I watch Rita come up to the fenceline. She's noted a bit of 'tall grass' that the other horses seem to have missed. Let me say, I've run the lawnmower in that bit and the only 'long grass' over there is the intentionally planted lovage and garlic, neither are very tasty. Rita thinks she's got the upperhand, though since Coco and Reigny are at a distance, so she CHOMPS on her prize! .... poor dear, I really can't think on it without bursting out in laughter, but she instantly gawps her jaws wide open, eyes rolling up in her head and she begins to shake it back and forth, all the while spitting it out and backing away from the fence. I did try not to laugh at her, but it was hilarious to watch her as she pulled faces and then began desperately dragging her tongue along the ground, trying for bits of grass, but spitting those out as well. I'm sure it was only the garlic she's gotten into, but poor girl, from her expressions I'd say she's not got a drop of Italian blood in her she thought that was the most horrid piece of grass she'd ever sampled The wildlife and critters here are SO entertaining! I wish there was a way to share what they do with everyone. It's one thing for me to tell or even show people what happen, but I wish there was a way for others to get to experience these guys firsthand. Seems the older I get, the less 'wild' wildlife becomes
