I found a slowworm on the concrete outside the ponies stables this morning, I think he had got stranded there after the sun had gone in last night, I picked him up and moved him so he didn't get squashed by the ponies hooves when I let them out. He started to get quite lively and wriggly with the warmth from my hand so I put him in the weak sun out of the way and 10 minutes later he'd warmed up and legged it.
We do get quite a few in and around the paddocks but it's unusual to see them this time of year, I took some photos with my phone but they were no good, not clear at all and not worth posting, even if I could remember what I've done with the cables to transfer photos from the phone to my computer.

Apologies for the size of the photos. I did resize them but probably not enough. This lovely creature was snapped in 2008 which is the last time I saw one. Some years before this I picked up what I thought was a slow worm only to discover it was possibly a young adder basking on a lane in the morning sunshine. I put it down very quickly!

How fascinating!!! I've never heard of these before. It's so lucky you moved it out of the line of pony feetsies. I see they like to eat slugs ....they'd be MOST welcome here! Seeing the online photos, they remind me of our anole lizards, sans legs. Thanks for sharing, I'd never heard of them

Katies photo is exactly like the one I saw yesterday and about the same size, Debbie they are legless lizards and not worms or snakes at all. I often see them either in the grass or more commonly basking on the concrete. I've seen a few over the years in different places but never as many as I've seen in and around the ponies paddocks, we must be a hotspot for them. Thanks for posting the photo Katie

He is rather cute.
Years ago I was taking a ride out from a riding school and we had to stop to let a family of adders cross the drive. The children were fascinated by them.

Wow, I've never seen a slow worm. I see loads of grass snakes near me, wish I could see one of these though. It's hard to believe that they're not snakes at all!
