I've been suffering with back pain/sciatica for the last few weeks which has been getting me down, hoping it doesn't mean the end of my riding years. Then to cap it all, I've come down with a horrid cold. Haven't felt this rough in years! Does any one else on here carry on riding with sciatica? I know it's to be expected at my age but I'm not ready to hang up my riding boots and Harvey is still raring to go.

You've every good reason to be feeling sorry, that's a double wallop For the cold, you might try this www.isabellacatalog.com/p/Himalayan-Salt-Sole-Detox The video on there explains it very well, and from what I understand, you can use any glass container, fill it with the Himalayan rock salt chunks, then the water and use it. I got mine to help my kidneys, and when it arrived, I was coming down with a headcold, so all snotty and stuffed in the head. Two days after taking it, my sinuses are the clearest they've been in years. I still sneeze or cough from time to time, but I'm all for missing that entire headcold thing. As for the sciatic, do you have an accupuncturist nearby that could help? I know some of it is people toughing through the pain, but really sciatic is about something pressing against nerve and causing this pain. It's better to address the underlying problem. I only had sciatic problems for a few days before my accupuncturist fixed it for me. It only took maybe three treatments total plus some Chinese herbal treatments to bring it round. Granted he mended mine after a fall, and it was prompt, but accupuncture might help in your case? I do hope you can find some help for it, though because you truly need to stay in the saddle. I think it helps your overall well being

Poor you. Hope cold soon retreats under the blizzard of helpful remedies you get offered. My new apparently-wonder concoction is honey mixed with ground cinnamon - meant to be amazing for almost everything! Not tried it myself yet, but sounds as though it would help a cold.
For the sciatica - I agree with Debbie - there must be an underlying nerve problem. I swear by osteopathy if you have one you trust.
Hope you are bouncing back by the jolly old 25th!

I don't think I have an actual back problem (with a name or one that can be diagnosed) but when I was about 14 I had a bad fall from my first pony who bucked me off, and I broke my coccyx, it was so embarrassing being at school having to sit on a a circular cushion (normally used for people with piles!!) in classes It took over a year before I could ride comfortably again. And nowadays (I'm 21 now) it still hurts at times especially in the cold. If I stand or sit still for long periods of time I get really bad back pain and stiffness. And some days when I ride it really hurts at first or after a long ride. I honestly think it's due to that fall 7 years ago. I can see myself getting all sorts of back issues later in life. But as long as I can ride I will!!!

Hope you're feeling better soon! It's awful having something that seems so minor compared to other illnesses wrong with you, but it really does affect your life! I've been really sceptical about this turmeric business but I've started Jester on some and he has made a slight improvement so perhaps that's something to try?

Thanks for the advise and sympathy. I've had 5 sessions of acupuncture now and I'm putting that down to why I've come down with this horrid bug! The guy I'm seeing is from the old Chinese school. Think it must be flu as I've had 2 days where I've had to say in bed but am on the up now hopefully. Osteopath is the next step but it will have to wait until after the Christmas break now. I like the sound of cinnamon and honey - will give that a go. I already take Turmeric and it does seem to help with my various arthritic problems.

Sorry to hear about your back Pam, it's so hard to ride when your in pain, the physio gave me an exercise... Press your back agains a wall and imagine your pulling up a zip in you really tight trousers..pull your stomach in and pull your pelvic bone up towards you as you pull the zip.. He said it stretches the muscles and releases the nerve causing the pain X

Sorry to hear this Pam, I agree about the osteopath, I couldn't believe the difference the first session made to my shoulder by untrapping nerves and relieving the nerve pain. Hope you're feeling better soon

Oh poor you. I've come into contact with so many people over the last three weeks I can't believe I have not had so much as a sniffle (you watch I'll be coughing tomorrow!)
Never had sciatica - just throw everything at it - if harvs isn't ready to give up then you can't.!
